How Radar Cross Section Shapes Drone Detection Range
Detection range is a function of more than transmitter power. A small quadcopter with a plastic frame may present a radar cross section of a few hundredths of a square metre, which shrinks the usable range dramatically compared with a fixed-wing platform.
Multi-static and phased-array radars recover some of that margin by looking from several angles. Operators should model the RCS of the specific airframes they expect, not the worst case from a datasheet.
Site clutter, terrain masking and even heavy rain reduce effective performance. Validate coverage with real flight trials before signing off on a detection layout.
