Fiber-Optic Sensing for Perimeter Intrusion Detection

September 24, 2026 admin

Distributed acoustic sensing turns a buried fibre cable into one long sensor that reports vibration along its entire length. For airspace security it protects the ground perimeter while radar watches the sky.

The technique is mature in pipeline and rail monitoring, and the same signal processing can separate digging, walking and vehicle movement. Vegetation and ground movement demand careful calibration.

It complements counter-UAS rather than replacing it. The real value is knowing someone is approaching the launch area before the aircraft ever lifts off.

  1. Good to see perimeter sensing framed as a cueing layer. Too many vendors sell it as a standalone cure and then blame the site.
